The story I'm about to tell is an example. It was a normal day on Barren Realms, I was with a few folks with whom I normally grouped, and that day we took on a few more, simply because we had big game in mind. :) After all was said and done, we had seven people in the group, all over level 44. There were 2 dwarves, 2 avians, a human and a druid. Well, if you've played very long you realize a group this size, with these types of characters in it, is extremely powerful. Well, the 7 of us decided it would be a good idea to take on the master of the 36 chambers, Buddha, simply because we wanted to see if we could do it. (Also because we'd heard his rings were awful nice.) So off we went, we arrived outside the first chamber without incident and then as we tried to enter, we found the way blocked for these chambers are private rooms, meaning only one person at a time is allowed inside. Well this stumped us for a few moments then our druid decided to try to summon the fellow out of hiding. Which she eventually did, though when it finally happened after many tries, none of us was ready, but even through our suprise and shock, we pulled back together as a unit to fight. We managed to kill Buddha himself with NO deaths in our group. It just goes to show that if a group pulls together and fights as a team, there is NO mob too strong, or no area too hard to fight your way through. But alone, no single class is nearly as powerful. Because our many classes worked as a team, we were the first, and ONLY group of mortals to ever kill Buddha. We even caused Buddha to be nosummon now, he was changed once the imm's saw our feat. P.S. I hear some of you now, "But my group killed Buddha also!" For those I have this answer, if you used a bug to get your group to Buddha, it doesn't count. :) I won't mention which bug simply because I don't want to see it anymore. /(*) | / | |\--------------------------------------------\ (@)(((((((( | >------------------Response-------------------- > | |/--------------------------------------------/ | \ \(*) ALL RESPONSES FROM REALITY: > Arion: mind control for illithids. Of course, as they are very powerful, there are certain rules they have to follow to keep the Barren Realms in balance, so please be courteous to them. HP -- Abbreviation for hit points, or how much damage your character can sustain. Imm, Immortal -- Levels 52-55, these people basically run the mud. Be very courteous to them, and listen if they tell you something. They are usually willing to help, but please don't abuse this. Imp -- Level 55, there are two of these (Oakley and Kiri). These people run the mud, and have the final say on any major decisions about the mud. Do not ask them for help unless it is very important, or there is no other hero or immortal on. If they tell you something, listen to them carefully. Kiri -- See Imp. Newbie -- Usually used to denote players at or below level 2, but is often used for anyone new to the mud or a certain level (newbie hero). Oakley -- See Imp. PK -- Player killing...DO NOT KILL OTHER PLAYERS! This is a non player killing mud. Ppl -- Abbreviation for people. PSteal -- Stealing from other players. This ranks with PK...no pk or pstealing on the Barren Realms. Quest -- Usually good and fun, Barren Realms quests are a chance to meet more people, have fun, and possibly gain good equipment or items. Also, a special Quest channel has been implemented. To access this, type the @ character in front of what you wish to say. Scroll -- Related to how fast the words on the screen move. Spam -- Either repeatedly doing something, or making it so that it is hard for others to play. (Repeated tells, chats, etc.) Tank -- Tank, or tanker, is used to denote the one who takes the first attack in a group. TNL -- Abbreviation for to next level. (How much xp tnl?) Corpses BATTLE UPDATE: has been killed by ! Don't you hate that message? It is the bane of all mudders, and yet it is as unavoidable as your ex-girlfriend. Upon seeing that message your next reaction usually includes lots of cursing and wondering why the hell you attacked the thing anyway. Along with that now everyone who is playing knows that you just messed up. So what do you do? Well that is easy. You stand up and start the prosses of going to retrieve your corpse. Hopefully you know where it is. Hopefully that mean lag has moved, or some nice adventurer, seeing your demise, has killed it. Hopefully you will never die again (right). Either way you have work ahead of you, because not only have you died, you have lost exp as well. But for now i just want to talk about the retrieval of the corpse. I have seen a more and more occuring reaction to this thing called death, people immediatly ask for a CR. They ask before they give a really good effort to find thier corpse. Some even ask before they take one step out of recall. Now to the lucky, or skilled (take your pick), adventurer who remembers where they died, it is all a matter of walking to your corpse. But of those who arn't to sure, they immediatly assume that someone should help. Granted there are times when you do need help, being killed by a mob that are aggro see-invis is one such case. This is a case that a Hero is the best person to ask. Heroes and Imm's know when you have been killed by such a mob, as well as the level of the mob that killed you. They will be monitoring your progress you make on retrieving your corpse. It is best to try at least once, either asking a mort to kill it or using sneak, to get your corpse before asking a Hero. If this is done then there will be no problem on getting the help you seek. Asking a Hero of Imm for a CR when you are just walking around, paying little or no attention to where you are, attacking mobs before considering them, and being just reckless with your character, is not a case where you have grounds ask for a CR. I'm not saying that people arn't entitled to a little help, but who should help you if you haven't tried to help yourself first. Now another trend I have seen that is becoming more common, are people getting upset when they don't get help immediatly upon their death. I know we have all witnessed the adventurer chating or shouting that they have recieved far more help on other muds than they are currently revieving here. You know what I say to that? If you don't like it leave, because as far as I'm concerned if you are shouting at me for help when all your problem is that you were not paying attention to where you were, and are somehow blaming me for it, then get off the mud. Where is the logic for being mad at someone who won't help you out of your own mess? I don't think there is any. The bottom line is that people need to take responsibility for thier own actions. I'm not saying that people don't make mistakes now and then, and that help should never be given, but if a person is automaticly given help everytime they mess up, then they will come to expect it, and that is not something that needs to happen. So when giving help to those people who ask for it, allow them to preform some the clean-up themselves. That way when it happens again, they will be able to help themselves, amd then everyone will be happy. A final word about retrieving corpses are lights. If I got a dime for everytime I saw somone rudely ask over chat for a light, I would have a new computer by now. Granted it wouldn't be a very good computer, but I think i could do it. Everyone that has mudded through one death knows that you loose everything when you die. So why is that so many people ask for a light? Easy answer, laziness. How hard is it to go to the grocer and buy a lantern? How hard is it to go to donations and get a bright ball of light? As a mort i donate every ball of light I come across for just that reason. It all comes back to being responsible for yourself. Now I'm not tring to hurt anyones feelings, or tell people they are wrong in thier actions, I'm merely pointing out something that I thing is a problem, and I'm sure if we all work on it, it is something we can improve. --- Ender /(*) | / | |\--------------------------------------------\ (@)(((((((( | >---------------Response-------------------- > | |/--------------------------------------------/ | \ \(*) >> Quiver: how about having some type of yell command for pets? >> (once in the same area, you can yell & they'll come to you.) > >Why would your pet not be in teh same room as you? Now, I play several MUD's and like to go to Scarborough Fair, Midevial Times, and am trying to plan a trip to CLAN in New Mexico this year. I have no idea why I picked my character to be a Dwarf. I started my first MUD with a Dwarf..and it seems to have stuck. I guess I connect with this race for some strange reason. I use them in all my MUD's. OK..let's see...I am 29 years old. My name IRL is Chris. I am finishing my Master's degree in Software Engineering at UNT. I am a major computer geek...and proud of it. I have interned at Microsoft for the last two years and hope to continue working with them after my graduation. Well, that's about all for me...hope to see many of you on the mud! ============================================================================ Well, here it is: what you always didn't want to know about me: Most people on Barren Realms know me as Govinda now, although I've played with other names too. I started mudding in august 1996 and entered the Realms because my first mud was unreachable one day and Barren Realms was the first mud in the alphabetical list of merc muds on Gopher that i could connect to. It wasn't untill my first character reached level 20 or so that i really understood how to play. There have been some months i hardly mudded but the first of march finally he heroed. I've heroed my second character, Govinda, the 13th of may at the age of 48, which means i succeeded in my plan to hero before 50. I'm usually on at strange times because where i live it is 7 hours later than system time. Then i say "morning realms" when many others are thinking of going to bed (or should be). I always mud in the University Library, so at night i cannot mud (and i think that's good for my real life) In real life people know me as Job de Kogel. I'm born the 29th of june 1977 in Leiden, the Netherlands (you all know the painter Rembrandt? well he came from Leiden too). I have two sisters, two and seven years younger than i am. Because my parents are (progressive) christians i went to a christian primary school. After that i did "Gymnasium", the diploma of which gives access to university. Now i'm studying Chemistry in Utrecht (in the middle of the Netherlands). I live in Utrecht in a flat together with three other students. They are members of the same studentsclub as me. I became a member when i started my study august '95 and since then I spend a lot of time there. I really like to just sit at the bar and talk and then get home (drunk) when the day has already begun :) ;I hate mornings and i love the night. That's why I'm often having such a hangover that i can do nothing all day but mud. Furthermore I'm a member of the notorious studentsdispute WEOHDH. I also like to read (Litterature and fantasy. My faforite authors include Robert Jordan, Henry Roth and of course a lot of dutch writers you donot know ), to play piano (Chopin-waltzes, Shubert-impromptus, Beethoven-sonatas and Grieg-suites a.o.), to ride my bicycle and to listen to music (all styles: Queen, Sonic Youth, Bettie Serveert (Dutch, but with also a lot of fans in the US), Beck, Tori Amos, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.etc). I hope to get a job in analytical chemistry, but first i'll have to study for another three or four years. I don't think I'll really stop mudding untill then, although I will spend less time in the Realms I think. Next year I'm gonna be treasurer of that studentsclub and that will take LOTS of time, but it will be great fun too. Not much muddingtime then..:) In any case I won't seriously start a new character. I guess this is all there is to tell, unless there are people who want to know that I'm 1 meter and 90 cm tall, I have long blonde hair and I'm wearing small glasses..(I don't really look special...and i don't think you're intersted either). In most cases these daring Realmers were fighting with a pet or a charmed mob. Here are some suggestions on how not to get a killer flag. 1) If you are a race that can charm or glare enemies into submission, give your group plenty of warning that you are going to do so... tell them before you actually glare or charm. This keeps your tanker from starting a battle by killing the pet you've just finished honing your skills on. 2) If you are a race who uses kick liberally as a fighting skill, the best thing to do is not kick. Use other skills when fighting in a group. Stray kicks can go to the next mob (remember that pet your group mate just charmed?). This also goes for dirtkick. I've known several people killed by their group because of the dirtkick spell. 3) When casting spells, kicking or any skill where you need to specify a target do not abbreviate. By spelling out the whole name or the proper name, you will be less likely to fight something you don't want to kill. ie instead of cast fireball lag, try cast fireball mean. 4) If you are going to have a pet name it something unlikely to be used by a mob in Barren Realms. I haven't seen too many Rovers... that might be safe. 5) Above all be considerate of your groupmates... ask if they mind a pet or charmed mob travelling with them. If you really want a pet you might be better off travelling alone. Xyg: sounds rather illithid to me > Psychic blow skill for illithids. illithid concentrates his psychic > powers into a hard to the chest of a mob. Xyg: I think illithids have enough attack spells > shoulder throw skill for humans. Human throws mob over his shoulder (end > result like trip) and the impact does some damage. Xyg: sounds nice :) One of the martial arts that is seen most is throwing peiople on the ground so I think this is ok (is trip inguild for humans? if so it's just a small change, unless damage is added) > astral void spell for elves. Elf opens a void into another dimension and > things for assorted junk to pelt the mob into oblivion.i Xyg: i don't really understand > psychic chains spell for illithids. Illithid uses the power of their > mind to hold the mob in the room (like web) Xyg: i think illithids can just practice web in- or outguild. The description of that spell doesn't specify the sort of web that is made, so it might as well be psychic chains > battlelust skill for illithids. Using their psychic powers, the illithid > can install a tremendous lust for battle in his fellow players. Xyg: *laugh* > a MUD based ping command to find out how bad some people (ie group > members) are lagged. Xyg: are you gonna write the code for that? > Arion: instead of spells for dwarves, they could have combo moves > that caused intense damage Xyg: i think too that at higher levels dwarves have too many spells and too little (inguild) skills. But the fact is that dwarves donot need many skills to be strong and win battles. So if new dwarfskills (that can be done without using mana !) are added, their strength will have to be reduced or something... with spells, the mana is keeping dwarves from using spells too much. > Quiver: How about modifying the code to update people that a personal note > has come to them to include all categories of notes that they receive? > (Also get an update if someone posts to all). Xyg: same idea as i had.....a good one imho >> > Berry: doors that can't be passed through with pass door >> >> xyg: And what if your corpse is behind it? >> > Then you need the key. I like the idea. Xyg: but people should be warned that if they die behind that door they will have to kill the mob with the key again (without wearing their eq) to get to their corpse. So one should be able to recognise "inpassible" doors> See you in the realms late at night (or early in the morning)! :) Xyganthos /(*) | / | |\--------------------------------------------\ (@)(((((((( | >----------------Bios----------------------- > | |/--------------------------------------------/ | \ \(*) Derek's Bio: "Hi folks, my real name was Philippe Dufour. And I'm back to Quebec city since 9 years..:) Quebec city is east of Canada on Quebec. Here the first language is french and the second language is english. Here 80% of the population talk french. Maybe you read about Quebec on Newspaper. Well we have a awful winter, but snow is cool for snowboard and hockey..:) I begin to play on Barren Realms just before my spring break. It's Hardfloor(RIP), one of my friend who talk me about this mud. I never been on MUd before I get on Barren Realms. Since this time, I played on Barren Realms a lot...:) And I like it ! :o) I think is one of the more friendly MUD(I explore some other MUD No one is like Barren Realms !). I tried to be freindly as possible since I'm HERO...:o} I hope then I will stay for long time with all of you..:) You're such as a family you know..:) Well there is nothing special to talk about me except then I'm tall (6'3'') an dI love play hockey as Goaltender( I play on a hockey's team), I study in Social Science on college Francois-Xavier-Garneau(Quebec city). But I think then college here is not like your college in USA and in rest of Canada. And I must said then I REALLY don't know what I'll do later in my life...:) Well I hope then you know me more now..:) Well bye and take care.. Derek Phantasia's Bio Hiya all! Many of you know me already, but this is to give you the inside scoop. :) Phantasia is my first BR character. As a matter of fact, she is my first ever MUD character. I was an irc junkie, who had never mudded before in her life, until a friend, Implosion, told me that I should give it a try. So he gave me the address, and I booted my telnet program, and thus began my adventure. That first night was terrifying. Words flew past my eyes far quicker than I could read. People were saying things to me, but I couldn't respond. After a little while, I learned how to speak, and how to actually filter the information I was getting. Low and behold... I found myself having fun! The story behind my name is a simple one. All I knew about mudding was what Implosion had told me. It was a role playing game. Some sort of fantasy online. I figured that Fantasy would be a good name for me, but I really liked the look of Phantasia a little better when I started to enter my name. And to anyone that's familiar with the movie "The Neverending story"... it had nothing to do with my name, honestly. :) Mudding is how I spend my nights, but during the day I am a student of Computer Science at DeVry Institute of Technology in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. I am also a softball umpire, musician and poet. I look after an online poetry page called Real Poetry, and am a founder of the Efnet irc channel #real_poetry. I was born in Cambridge Ontario, and currently live in Brantford Ontario. If the city sounds familiar, it's because it's the birthplace of Wayne Gretzky. (We Canadians Love Our Hockey!) As far as future aspirations... As can be seen in my profile... I hope to someday rule the world. Or at least hollywood. It's about time they put a woman in charge of everything! But realistically, I would like to start my own software company. I will always write poetry on the side. (There just isn't much money in it) Poetry will always be my one true love, it is with me when I wake, and it tucks me into bed at night. There you have it! Interesting stuff huh? *laugh* @>----------------[Webpages]--------------------------------------- Webpage section: Just a small update...
